The Zhitong Finance App learned that, according to people familiar with the matter, Apple (AAPL.US) plans to expand its news platform. Currently, the platform serves 125 million readers in the US, Canada, the UK and Australia every month.

The iPhone maker is considering rolling out the service in more countries to expand its influence in the digital news sector.

The US-based tech group aims to strengthen its role in driving revenue for publishers and improving advertising effectiveness. The platform has become a key player in the digital news industry and is part of the company's efforts to connect consumers with its products.

The report said, “Although Apple News doesn't produce much original news, Apple News, which was launched nearly 10 years ago, has had a considerable impact on the content that tens of millions of people in major Western countries read every day.”

The free and paid versions of the app provide customized stories selected from newspapers, magazines, games, podcasts, and newsletters.

Since its launch five years ago, the paid version of Apple News+ has expanded from 300 publications to over 450 publishers worldwide. This service costs $12.99 per month in the US, and £12.99 in the UK.

“One of the biggest risks for publishers is that Apple will nibble on potential users who may directly pay for content,” the report added.
