It might be of some concern to shareholders to see the Herc Holdings Inc. (NYSE:HRI) share price down 19% in the last month. But over five years returns have been remarkably great. Indeed, the share price is up a whopping 309% in that time. Arguably, the recent fall is to be expected after such a strong rise. But the real question is whether the business fundamentals can improve over the long term.

So let's assess the underlying fundamentals over the last 5 years and see if they've moved in lock-step with shareholder returns.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

Over half a decade, Herc Holdings managed to grow its earnings per share at 50% a year. The EPS growth is more impressive than the yearly share price gain of 33% over the same period. So one could conclude that the broader market has become more cautious towards the stock.

What About Dividends?

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. We note that for Herc Holdings the TSR over the last 5 years was 334%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

We're pleased to report that Herc Holdings shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 33% over one year. And that does include the dividend. However, that falls short of the 34% TSR per annum it has made for shareholders, each year, over five years. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Even so, be aware that Herc Holdings is showing 2 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 1 of those is potentially serious...
