Agence France-Presse quoted Statistics Canada data on the 26th as reporting that hydroelectric power accounts for about 60% of Canada's total electricity generation. Canada has long been a major exporter of hydropower. However, due to extreme weather seriously affecting the country's hydropower production capacity, Canada has recently been forced to cut hydropower exports to the US, and the export volume has fallen to the lowest level in 14 years. Earlier this year, Canada even bought electricity from the US for three consecutive months, the first time in eight years.
