On January 25, the 5th meeting of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on Plastic Pollution opened in Busan, South Korea. The aim of the negotiations is to reach a legally binding agreement to control plastic pollution under the leadership of the United Nations Environment Programme. The conference was held after two years of four rounds of intergovernmental negotiations to develop a legally binding global instrument covering the terrestrial and marine environment. The previous four meetings were held in Uruguay, France, Kenya, and Canada. More than 170 countries and more than 600 observation organizations registered to participate in the week-long conference in Busan, South Korea. Through a video, South Korean President Yoon Seok-yeol called on participants to achieve the goal of zero plastic pollution for future generations.
