Burberry Group plc (LON:BRBY) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 29% after a shaky period beforehand. Still, the 30-day jump doesn't change the fact that longer term shareholders have seen their stock decimated by the 54% share price drop in the last twelve months.
Although its price has surged higher, Burberry Group may still be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 10.4x, since almost half of all companies in the United Kingdom have P/E ratios greater than 17x and even P/E's higher than 29x are not unusual. However, the P/E might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
Burberry Group could be doing better as its earnings have been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive earnings growth. It seems that many are expecting the dour earnings performance to persist, which has repressed the P/E. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Want the full picture on analyst estimates for the company? Then our free report on Burberry Group will help you uncover what's on the horizon. The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as low as Burberry Group's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market.
If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 42%. This means it has also seen a slide in earnings over the longer-term as EPS is down 19% in total over the last three years. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing earnings over that time.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the analysts covering the company suggest earnings growth is heading into negative territory, declining 18% per year over the next three years. With the market predicted to deliver 14% growth per year, that's a disappointing outcome.
In light of this, it's understandable that Burberry Group's P/E would sit below the majority of other companies. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/E has reached a floor yet with earnings going in reverse. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as the weak outlook is weighing down the shares.
Despite Burberry Group's shares building up a head of steam, its P/E still lags most other companies. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
We've established that Burberry Group maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its forecast for sliding earnings, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
