On October 21, Mercedes-Benz opened Europe's first battery recycling plant using an integrated mechanical-hydrometallurgical process, becoming the first car company in the world to use its own factory to achieve closed loop battery recycling. Unlike existing traditional processes in Europe, this recycling plant in Kuppenheim in southern Germany uses mechanical-hydrometallurgy processes, and the recovery rate is expected to exceed 96%. The Mercedes-Benz battery recycling plant initially processes 2,500 tons per year. The recycled materials can be used in the production of more than 50,000 battery modules for new Mercedes-Benz electric vehicles.
