California created 14,700 new jobs in September, averaging 16,500 new jobs per month this year, the Newsom administration said Friday. The per-month average surpasses 2023’s 12,900 new jobs per month and 2024’s annualized pace of growth also exceeds last year’s. The number of employed Californians was also up on a year-over-basis; conversely, so was the number of unemployed Californians.

Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office cited a report from the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC) which found that the state’s economy has grown faster than the nation overall, at 111% vs 75% over the past 25 years. California’s economy ranks fifth internationally, behind the U.S., China, Germany and Japan. “On a per capita basis, California’s GDP is greater than all of these countries,“ according to PPIC.

Newsom said, “California’s growth is powered by its workers and innovators, the driving forces behind our consistent economic growth and expanding job market.”
