Despite an already strong run, MDA Space Ltd. (TSE:MDA) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 27% in the last thirty days. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 76% in the last year.
After such a large jump in price, given close to half the companies in Canada have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") below 15x, you may consider MDA Space as a stock to avoid entirely with its 53.3x P/E ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.
With earnings that are retreating more than the market's of late, MDA Space has been very sluggish. It might be that many expect the dismal earnings performance to recover substantially, which has kept the P/E from collapsing. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

Keen to find out how analysts think MDA Space's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start. There's an inherent assumption that a company should far outperform the market for P/E ratios like MDA Space's to be considered reasonable.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 9.9% decrease to the company's bottom line. At least EPS has managed not to go completely backwards from three years ago in aggregate, thanks to the earlier period of growth. Accordingly, shareholders probably wouldn't have been overly satisfied with the unstable medium-term growth rates.
Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to climb by 52% per annum during the coming three years according to the seven analysts following the company. With the market only predicted to deliver 10% per year, the company is positioned for a stronger earnings result.
In light of this, it's understandable that MDA Space's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.
MDA Space's P/E is flying high just like its stock has during the last month. Using the price-to-earnings ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
We've established that MDA Space maintains its high P/E on the strength of its forecast growth being higher than the wider market, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in earnings isn't great enough to justify a lower P/E ratio. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.
