Intel, AMD Join Forces To Shape The Future Of Computing

Intel Corp. (NASDAQ:INTC) and Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (NASDAQ:AMD) have teamed up to form an x86 ecosystem advisory group, aiming to shape the future of one of the world’s most widely used computing architectures.

This collaboration seeks to address the growing demands of modern computing by fostering compatibility and innovation across various platforms, according to the companies.

What Happened: The newly formed advisory group aims to bring together industry leaders, focusing on expanding the x86 architecture’s capabilities.

"Establishing the x86 Ecosystem Advisory Group will ensure that the x86 architecture continues evolving as the compute platform of choice for both developers and customers," said AMD CEO Lisa Su.

The group includes key industry players like Broadcom Inc., Google Cloud, Dell Technologies, and Microsoft Corp.

“We are at a crossroads in the history of computing. The x86 architectural decisions we make today will affect programming models, frameworks and systems for decades to come.” said Broadcom Inc. President and CEO Hock Tan. “Broadcom looks forward to lending its industry perspective to the x86 Ecosystem Advisory Group as a pioneer in silicon development and x86 virtualization with VMware.”

Despite this cooperative move, AMD faces challenges from Nvidia Corp. and Intel, both of which have reinforced their positions in the CPU and GPU markets. Oppenheimer analyst Rick Schafer remains cautious about AMD’s growth potential. He highlighted the increasing competition in the AI and data center markets.

While AMD has increased its AI focus, initial projections for its MI300 series sales have been scaled back, illustrating the uphill battle in this sector.

AMD's alliance with Intel may provide strategic advantages, but the company must navigate a challenging market to sustain growth.
