It's not a stretch to say that Huagong Tech Company Limited's (SZSE:000988) price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 30.7x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the market in China, where the median P/E ratio is around 30x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/E ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.
Huagong Tech certainly has been doing a good job lately as its earnings growth has been positive while most other companies have been seeing their earnings go backwards. One possibility is that the P/E is moderate because investors think the company's earnings will be less resilient moving forward. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

If you'd like to see what analysts are forecasting going forward, you should check out our free report on Huagong Tech.Huagong Tech's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver moderate growth, and importantly, perform in line with the market.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company managed to grow earnings per share by a handy 13% last year. Pleasingly, EPS has also lifted 87% in aggregate from three years ago, partly thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been superb for the company.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the six analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 24% per annum over the next three years. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to only expand by 19% per annum, which is noticeably less attractive.
With this information, we find it interesting that Huagong Tech is trading at a fairly similar P/E to the market. It may be that most investors aren't convinced the company can achieve future growth expectations.
Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
We've established that Huagong Tech currently trades on a lower than expected P/E since its forecast growth is higher than the wider market. When we see a strong earnings outlook with faster-than-market growth, we assume potential risks are what might be placing pressure on the P/E ratio. At least the risk of a price drop looks to be subdued, but investors seem to think future earnings could see some volatility.
