According to an AFP report from Washington on September 27, the US filed charges against three Iranians on the 27th, accusing Iran of interfering in the election, and alleging that malicious actors hacked former President Trump's election campaign. US Attorney General Merrick Garland said that the three defendants allegedly conspired with others to “carry out extensive hacking operations over several years on behalf of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.” The report said that the recent actions of these Iranians targeted individuals linked to the US political campaign. Garland said, “The defendants' own words clearly indicate that they are trying to disrupt former President Trump's campaign before the 2024 US election.” Court documents show that these cyber actors used spear phishing and social engineering techniques to attack the accounts of US government officials and individuals. According to the indictment, these cyber actors began operations as early as 2020 and began targeting personal accounts of people linked to a US presidential campaign around May 2024, and unauthorised access to these accounts. They then attempted to divulge the stolen material to media personnel and people believed to be linked to another presidential campaign.
