The Market Doesn't Like What It Sees From AltPlus Inc.'s (TSE:3672) Revenues Yet As Shares Tumble 33%

Simply Wall St · 09/27 21:34

AltPlus Inc. (TSE:3672) shares have had a horrible month, losing 33% after a relatively good period beforehand. For any long-term shareholders, the last month ends a year to forget by locking in a 54% share price decline.

After such a large drop in price, given about half the companies operating in Japan's Entertainment industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") above 1.3x, you may consider AltPlus as an attractive investment with its 0.6x P/S ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/S.

What Does AltPlus' Recent Performance Look Like?

For instance, AltPlus' receding revenue in recent times would have to be some food for thought. It might be that many expect the disappointing revenue performance to continue or accelerate, which has repressed the P/S. However, if this doesn't eventuate then existing shareholders may be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/S?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as low as AltPlus' is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry.

Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 18%. This means it has also seen a slide in revenue over the longer-term as revenue is down 48% in total over the last three years. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

Weighing that medium-term revenue trajectory against the broader industry's one-year forecast for expansion of 6.8% shows it's an unpleasant look.

With this information, we are not surprised that AltPlus is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/S has reached a floor yet with revenue going in reverse. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as recent revenue trends are already weighing down the shares.

The Bottom Line On AltPlus' P/S

AltPlus' P/S has taken a dip along with its share price. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

As we suspected, our examination of AltPlus revealed its shrinking revenue over the medium-term is contributing to its low P/S, given the industry is set to grow. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises either. Given the current circumstances, it seems unlikely that the share price will experience any significant movement in either direction in the near future if recent medium-term revenue trends persist.

It's always necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 3 warning signs with AltPlus (at least 1 which is a bit unpleasant), and understanding these should be part of your investment process.
